Halloween fun facts

You know what's really pathetic? I still haven't finished the kids' costumes....I put the stuff to do their treat bags in my bag, so maybe I can do it at naptime today!

And now some fun facts about Halloween:

Jack-o-lanterns trace back to an old Irish tale about a man named Stingy Jack. Unable to enter Heaven because of his stingy ways and turned away by the Devil, Stingy Jack wandered the world, searching for a resting place. To light his way, Stingy Jack used a burning coal in a hollowed out turnip -- hence the name "jack-o-lantern." The first jack-o-lanterns, in fact, were carved out of turnips. Only when the Irish tradition reached America did turnip carving turn into pumpkin carving.Halloween is the 8th largest card-sending occasion. There are over 28 million Halloween cards sent each year!(Who sends cards on Halloween??) There are many variations on the history of Halloween, but it's generally believed that Halloween dates back to 700 B.C. to the Celts, a rural society in northern England, Ireland and Scotland. On November 1, the first day of their new year, the Celts celebrated a festival called Samhain ("sow-in"). Chosen to signify the end of the harvest season and the onset of winter, Samhain was also thought to be a day of the dead. Because it was the end of one year and the start of another, the Celts believed that past and present were closely linked, allowing ancestral spirits to join them. On the eve of Samhain, October 31, the Celts dressed in costume, lit bonfires, and offered food and drink to masked revelers. Many say the costumes and fires were used to drive away the spirits, and the food given to placate the dead. October 31 came to be called Halloween when the Christians proclaimed November 1 as All Hallow Day. Unable to stop the pagan ritual of Samhain, the Christians made it a day to celebrate saints who had no day of their own. The night before, or All Hallow Eve, was later shortened to Halloween.

We love Billy!

Yay...I'm almost done with the Halloween cookies, then I'll have a break for a couple of weeks! The kiddos gutted the pumpkins last night...at least Autumn did. Brandon thought it was too yucky, and he wouldn't stick his hands in. We'll carve them today. Brandon wants a face, and Autumn (shockingly enough) wants a unicorn...that ought to bo a fun thing to carve!

The Stars won last night...the first two periods were really bad, but I guess they got chewed out in the second intermission, and they played really well in the third, especially Billy Guerin, who had a hat trick to tie the game, and they won less than a minute into overtime. Wow, that was a run-on sentence. It was great! Unfortunatly I was up late because I was watching the game instead of finishing my cookies...I still haven't finished the kids' goodie bags or made Brandon's bandolier-I'm not sure how you spell that- so I guess I had better do that tonight. I can't wait till Saturday. There's nothing I have to do saturday...

The many stores of Cedar Hill

I've noticed I haven't balanced my checkbook in about two weeks...You know they shorted Mike's check by twenty-six hours? And he only gets paid every two weeks, so you know that we're gonna have to wait for two weeks--or more--till they fix it. Oh well, though, what can you do?

You know I went looking for khaki pants for Autumn last weekend and I couldn't find any? Now granted I didn't look real hard, but you'd think that something like that would be available all year and not just in September. Maybe I'll go to Old Navy this weekend. I can see what Kohl's has on it's clearance racks since I'll be in Cedar Hill anyway...and maybe go to Hobby Lobby....ooh, and Party City! And Dollar Tree is over there too...and Barnes and Noble..and Petco! So many great stores...

Anyway....man, I still need to finish the kid's costumes. Autumn'll never forgive me if I don't make her a unicorn treat bag like I promised.....Wow, I've written half a page and I still haven't said anything. I gotta go anyway, my kitchen's trashed...

Anyone seen fall?

Well, gosh, I had been all happy because I thought fall was finally here, but apparently yesterday was fall and now we've gone straight on into spring...you know, there's only one month till winter and I'm still waiting on fall. It wouild be nice to have one normal season!

My friend Renee at work gave me a couple on tickets to the Stars game on Sunday. Yay! They're only ok seats, but hey, it's free! We haven't been able to afford a game in 5 years... I can't wait!

The kids are excited about Halloween. Brandon keeps asking about when I'm going to costume him. And they both want to gut the pumpkins, but I told them we had to wait till Wednesday. Our pumpkins rotted last year, you see...

no Bratz!

Yay! It's cold! I even had to turn the heat on this morning...maybe fall's finally here! Maybe it'll even stay around....

It was a pretty poor weekend for sports- the Stars had an absolutly abysmal showing on Friday night and a marginally better one Saturday, and the Cowboys lost yesterday, too.

Autumn has started making her birthday list and I'm sure she'd like me to share it with you, so here's some of the things she wants...Barbie stuff for her, but not Barbie dolls or stuff for Barbie dolls. She no longer plays with the dolls. What I mean is that she wears Barbis clothes, and she likes the Barbie books, movies and art stuff, just not the dolls. I already bought her the Swan Lake DVD for her (shhhh!) but she never got the Rapunzel DVD ...she also has the Swan Lake book and the Rapunzel book...she likes unicorns, anything pink or fluffy, and computer games (Mac sys 9 or OSX compatible!) She has also started playing with her Leap Pad more, so she'd probably like some new books for that. Um, she wears size 6 (slim if you can find them) and shoe size 13. I can't think of anything else but I'm sure she'll let me know if I've forgotten anything. Oh, and the mommy note...please please no Bratz! Some of Autumn's friends like them, so she's asked about them, but I think they're horrid, horrid little dolls and I won't let her have any...

mmm...Sean Connery

The Stars didn't win last night....it was somewhat easier to take since Joe Nieuwendyk scored the game winner for Toronto, but I hate to give Eddie Belfour the satisfaction of beating Marty... Why is it that we seem to have a hard time beating these teams that are struggling with their offense?

It's amazing the inane knowledge you can come up with if you try...I found out this morning that Sean Connery has worked as a milkman, coffin-polisher, and builder. But who cares? Sean Connery is a very attractive older man. We can only hope that we all look that good when we're his age!

I have to get gas this morning. If I would take the time to do it after work, I wouldn't have to leave early....but some people never learn...

ZIP

Today I found out what the ZIP stands for in ZIP code--Zoning Improvement Plan. I'm sure that you're now absolutly bowled over by my wealth of knowledge...

Autumn has a field trip tomorrow to the Pumpkin Patch....which reminds my, I still need to buy pumpkins for Jack-o-lanterns and finish the kids' Halloween costumes...and candy for the trick-or-treaters...and batteries for their flashlights...good thing Mike gets paid this week! Well, I'm running out of time, must go now...plus the cat's swatting at me, guess she's starving.......

count your buttons

Yay! The Stars won last night, making them 3 and 2 this season...and the 'Boys won too, giving them five in a row...all in all, a good day for Dallas sports fans. Better still, the Anaheim Not-So-Mighty Ducks have lost their (vindictive chortle) fifth in a row, making them 0-5, which is, of course, by far their worst start of the season..

I went in to wake Brandon up this morning only to find that he had gotten the fish food from the living room and dumped its entire contents into his fish tank. Now this can was about half full...needless to say his poor fishies are swimming around in some pretty murky water about now...

I read today that in 1845 English law, attempting to commit suicide was considered a capital offense, punishable by hanging. Well gosh, they really thought that one through, didn't they? Also, I find it worth mentioning that tomorrow is both National Babbling Day and National Count Your Buttons Day. Now those sound like worthy holidays...

I, me, mine

I read this morning that the most commonly used word in American conversation is "I". Kinda makes you think, huh?

Now I will say a brief prayer to the hockey gods....Please oh please ye mighty gods of hockey, let the Stars win! No more shots off of goalposts, and double please less turnovers..... There, maybe that'll help. That and the chewing Dave Tippett has surely given them...I desperately need them to play well, because I have managed to drop to eleventh in my fantasy league...Autumn doesn't have class today or Monday, so she just gets to play in extended care all day...I think she's a little disappointed that she doesn't get to go to class...I helped to move a piano yesterday, and now my shoulders are sore...I suppose that's what I get! It didn't help that I kept waking up last night, either...for some reason I haven't slept well this week. Maybe cuz the Stars are doing so badly...

motorcycle cops?

Geez...the Stars lost again last night..it just doesn't seem fair that we lose two in a row while a team like Atlanta is sitting at the top of the league...I don't even want to look at my fantasy standings. I can't wait till Lehtienin comes back. Maybe that'll help...

I had to pay my traffic ticket today, so now I'm broke...and in my defense, how am I supposed to watch out for motorcycle cops when I didn't even know Midlothian had motorcycle cops?... Anyway, not much is going on, so I won't bore you...I'll just go!

Rats!

The Stars lost yesterday, which wouldn't be so supremely annoying except for that a) they were turning the puck over all over the ice--it was pretty bad!--and b)they lost to Buffalo, who not only have not won a game yet, but haven't even scored a goal yet! Well, they sure scored last night--4 goals!

Brandon doesn't want to get dressed today...he's being a pain. I can't blame him, though, I don't like getting up either! <

Autumn's busily planning her birthday party...too bad she still has a month and a half to go. Her birthday is the day after Thanksgiving this year, and her party's the day after that...

That dumb cat has decided to start bringing her kills inside...obviously it's much too windy for a delicate creature like her to eat outside, so she brought her rat-rat! - inside. She didn't want to give it up, either...she wasn't real happy with me chasing her down...such exciting mornings I have...

No dunking booth?

They cancelled the dunking booth, so I didn't get to dunk my dad...I was sad...

The Stars won again, hooray! And, just as good, Anaheim lost again...that makes them 0-3 on the young season...poor Gigure (snicker) can't stop jack-squat without his big ol' pads....Told you so! Told you so!

I don't know where my wallet is. That's probably not good...I think it's still in Mike's truck. At least I hope it is...

Thursday, October 09, 2003

Gigure...how do ya like them apples??

hooray! Tha Stars won last night, 4-1...I guess Jean-Sebastian Gigure isn't so tough without the massive, barely-legal equipment he wore last year! Heh...I'm fairly bubbling over with an almost evil glee. Chortling, even. Ahhh...it's nice to be right. All those times when I and all the other fans complained that if it weren't for those darn illegal pads...

Missy got out again last night...Mike wanted to pile rocks in her hole and I wanted to nail a board over it....since Mike wasn't inclined to get up and help, I piled rocks in the hole and she dug out....told you so... So I told Mike that we were going to put a board up as soon as I get home...

Still have to pack the kids lunches, so I must go....

Tons o' cookies

Autumn woke up with a cough this morning. Hope she's not getting sick! She says she doesn't feel bad, though.

Yay! Hockey season starts in two days! I can hardly wait...I have about a bajillion cookies to make today and tomorrow. For some reason everyone wanted their cookies on Wednesday...let's see, four dozen plus one and one half dozen plus two dozen plus one dozen is...eight and a half...Well, I still have a couple of things to do this morning, so I better cut this short!

A useless entry

Yay! I got to watch a Stars game on TV last night! Unfortunatly, they lost. Turco looked really rusty. But I suppose that's what you get for skipping a week of training camp...good thing it's only preseason!

I finally got my checks in the mail yesterday. Good thing, too....most of my bills I can pay online, but not the car or truck payments, or the house payment...I didn't want to have to get another cashier check or money order!

Purple carrots?

I just heard this morning that Dany Heatly and Dan Snyder got in this heally bad car wreck yesterday...Heatley should be ok but Snyder's in pretty bad shape...AP says--Heatley lost control of his 2002 Ferrari 360 Modena on a curve on a two-lane road Monday night in Atlanta, police said. The vehicle crossed into the other lane, left the road and struck a wrought iron and brick wall in front of an apartment complex. The car was ripped in half and the players were thrown onto the road.

Heatley also was charged with serious injury by vehicle -- a felony -- and three misdemeanors, police spokesman Sgt. Kevin Iosty said.

I slept with the window open last night. It was great...nice and cool. In fact, I was cold when I woke up this morning...I love fall!

I discovered something interesting this morning...In the 18th century all carrots were either purple or white. It was the Dutch farmers who decided to plant and cultivate orange crops as it was their national color. Now, I've seen white carrots--you know, the wild ones,-- but I've never seen purple ones. And you know what else I was wondering? When a new housing development goes up, like where we live, who picks the street names?

Yay! Let's print!

Yay! My printer works! Now I can finally print out five years worth of pictures for the kids' scrapbooks....guess I'll be busy for awhile...but now I can fill in all the blanks! I'm afraid once we got our video camera, we just quit taking regular pictures...man I need a digital camera!

Tomorrow (Oct. 2nd) is National Name Your Car Day! My car's name is Clarissa. What's yours? Oh, know what? My dad's company picnic is in two weeks, and guess what? He got volunteered for the dunking booth! (insert evil chuckle here) Guess where the longest line's gonna be? And where I'll be spending my day...... bwahahahahaha!
